FaMA at Home: The Kids Lead the Way in Fitness!

fama singapore blog kids at home

What does life look like, being at cooped up at home during this Circuit Breaker season? Admittedly, we adults have adapted rather slowly. We are indeed, creatures of habit. This curveball has led us to realise how much we depend on all sorts of systems to live a comfortable life.

The first week was an uphill climb for many of us. From struggling to find alternatives to keep fit (try telling a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner to go jogging), to wondering how to stay connected with each other (anyone wanna Zoom?). We were forced to learn and adapt to this "new normal" at an almost-unreasonable speed. Thankfully, a new rhythm is finally falling into place, but we know that the learning curve has only just begun to steepen.

While we adults try to figure things out, we hear reports of the FaMA Kids, and their families, creating a spin on their Home-Based Learning: a Fitness Edition!

Here are a few cool activities that the young ones have been up to...

Happy Birthday Auntie Alice

Not only does she make sure the academy is safe and clean for us to use, she always makes sure we’re well-fed too.

We miss you Auntie Alice and from the entire FaMA community, we wish you a Happy Birthday.

Since the academy is temporarily closed we needed to start thinking of new ways to continue sharing useful fitness and martial arts information with our community. Check out FaMA Recommendations, a wide range of useful and fun content curated from the FaMA team.

I have been on beltchecker.com since March. It is a new system for BJJ practitioners to gauge credibility, apart from IBJJF. I like it in the sense that you get to see a very transparent track record of belt promotion, and it works as a personal diary for your BJJ journey. The database has grown from about 8000 users when I joined, to almost 12,000 users now. If you train Jiu-Jitsu, I highly recommend you to check it out.

MUSIC

Blond by Frank Ocean - A stripped back, avant-garde pop album influenced by The Beatles, Kanye West, Stevie Wonder as well as other contemporary artists.

The 20/20 Experience by Justin Timberlake - Produced by my favourite producer, Timbaland, this album was Justin Timberlake’s most expansive musical project, with 7 minute tracks and complex song structures.

Purple Rain by Prince - A classic.

NETFLIX

Icarus - Story of the doping scandal behind the cycling world.

LA Originals - Reminds me of home. Tells the story of a tattoo artist and a photographer in LA who set trends and documented a lot of that world in the 90’s.

PODCASTS

The Joe Rogan Experience - During this lockdown I’ve been even watching it on YouTube.

BOOKS

Carlos Gracie: The Creator of a Fighting Dynasty - This is the story of Master Carlos Gracie. He is the eldest Gracie who actually started/created BJJ. Many people still believe Helio created BJJ which is a bit false. One thing we should all do is learn the history of BJJ. I recently shared a YouTube video of how BJJ transformed when it came to America in 1989 but not many people know the breakdown before that.

I share with you one fact in this book. The first Gracie Academy opened in 1925. It was mainly an academy for private lessons only for friends or police. The Gracie Family Academy wasn’t open to the general public or walk-ins until 1951. If you want to know why then you need to read this book. The book is written by Roger Gracie's mother (I have a signed copy) which shines a lot of light on what we thought we knew about the history of this family.

Senna - I like this documentary because I enjoyed seeing the better driver outclass politics and money over the sport.

Mindhunter Season 1 - The characters, dialogue and suspense had me on the edge of my couch.

The Inbetweeners - Pure young adult British comedy. After you watch the show, make sure to watch the movies.

My taste in music is thanks to the influence of my older brother. It was during the days of Napster, Limewire and CD’s we burned that I really got into particular bands and genres. I wasn’t tech-savvy and so whatever CD’s my brother had a hold of or whatever he downloaded was what I would listen to as well.

He went through a range of genres and although only a couple of them stuck with me, I am so grateful for his appreciation of classic rock music. I was born just after the great rock & roll era, and so thanks to him I got the chance to get into the classic hits myself.

Most of my students grew up in the 70’s & 80’s where rock and roll was at its peak, and so this playlist goes out to all of them - I see you guys see singing along in my classes!

I think Gallerr is a great platform where we can get excellent BJJ lessons while staying home. It was recommended to me by my Professor, Professor Gordo. You can even find some of his videos on there.

This is the YouTube video/movie I would recommend our students to watch. It shows a lot of the history of BJJ coming to California in 1989 and growing into what it is now. Many people have seen ’Choke’ the story of Rickson Gracie, but this is a well-made documentary on BJJ coming to my home.
